Crime Based Serials And Our Society

Human Society comprises of a complex blend of psyches. When human desires fail to fulfill or when interests collide and when people lose trust in God, crimes take place. Such crimes are common in any society let it be civilized or un-civilized. Crimes, be of any kind, greatly influence the lives of people. Hence, knowing about them helps in avoiding the crimes or at least save oneself from being affected.

Television is the most powerful media of mass communication these days. It is the most popular means of entertainment and knowledge. Every group of the society watches the TV, either regularly or irregularly. Serial programmes have emerged to be further more acceptable form of amusement and have formed a kind of addiction. Similarly, crime based programmes have also gained popularity among the common people. Nowadays, more and more people are watching this kind of serials.

It all started with the “India’s Most Wanted” that was first aired on the TV and presented by Suhaib Ilyasi. A lot of crimes were then unearthed and of course, a few than none, criminals were also brought behind the bars. After that some other Channels also started similar programmes and not very late, every channel felt it necessary to show such serials based on true stories of crime. The intention behind showing this kind of serials is said to be public awareness about crimes and promoting public involvement in controlling the crime rate.

The mode of presenting the programme leaves either positive or negative impact on the viewers. The anchor also plays an important part in influencing people. If he presents a programme of little interest in an interesting manner the programme becomes acceptable to the viewers, on the other hand if he lacks ability of effective presentation, a serial with most attractive theme may distract the viewers. It depends on the director as well as the anchor to convey a message among the masses.

The public becomes aware of the crimes emerging in the society, therefore they become more cautious of their surroundings and hence, they mentally prepare themselves to fight the crime. The awareness about an absconding criminal alerts the security personnel of various institutions like treasuries, banks and big concerns. Parents grow to be more cautious about the safety of their kids.

As soon as a problem is brought to the notice of the public, they feel themselves involved into it. Many a time, a mystery is solved by the help of common men that seems to be difficult to the Police. The programme is presented in such effective way that all of a sudden people prepare themselves to combat similar situations within the society.

When people see on the TV screen that how efficiently the police and the intelligence have busted a racket and brought the offenders behind the bars, they experience a sense of security within themselves.

Sense of insecurity

But at times, when they come to know that how brutally a person who looks like one among themselves, murders people and a person as poor as an auto rickshaw driver can turn out to be a serial killer, they feel insecure and a kind of fear develops within the society. Especially the women and children, sometimes develop a kind of fear psychosis.

People come to know about the real condition of the society and they experience a lot of things like security, insecurity, impact of the changing society etc. owing to these programmes. They come to know that how much have the administration and police personnel corrupted or up to what extent they are honest? How and why crimes are nourished and where do the criminals get asylum and much more.

Generally people have little knowledge about the law, legal processes, legal provisions etc., due to these programmes they know the necessary rules and laws and hence they become more aware about their rights as well as duties.

People come to know the real position of the police and administration, whether they are encouraging crime or they have certain difficulties and restrictions that prevent them to enforce the law. Many a time crimes develop due to deals between the outlaws and the police, or due to negligence of the administration, in both the cases, reality is brought forward by these programmes.

The Crime Serials on one hand entertain the masses by creating sensation and suspense and play a role of vigilant watchdog in the society. While on the other hand, they occasionally happen to be an inspiration to the criminals and indirectly encourage them for a crime. However, these serials are gaining much applaud from the viewers and have become an essential part of most of the TV channels. The people with criminal instinct often get inspired by one such serial and commit a crime. The others get an idea of getting out of a difficult situation by means of a crime. Another disadvantage of such programmes is that some criminal also become alert by seeing that how the police work for nabbing the culprits. They get ways to deceive the police and fool around with the law.
