The European Commission has proposed a new legislation that would lower pesticide use in half by 2030 and entirely ban the use of these chemical compounds near educational institutions, playgrounds and hospitals. The proposal is portion of a more substantial established of aims to reverse biodiversity loss and restore 20% of land and seas by the stop of the ten years.
The laws gives €100 billion ($105 billion) for biodiversity-targeted initiatives to ward off what European Fee Government Vice President Frans Timmermans calls a “looming ecocide.”
In accordance to the Pesticide Motion Network of Europe, nearly 350,000 metric tons of pesticides were bought in Europe in 2019, primarily for agriculture. A 2017 report from the European Commission observed that pesticides lead to pollution that immediately impacts biodiversity and ecosystems.
